War with the Sky

by Marc Adamus

I arrived in Eureka Valley, home of some of the highest, steepest sand dunes on the continent just as a winter front was approaching the area creating very high winds that made climbing up into the sand all but impossible. A fortuitous happenstance, I discovered, as I made my way around the edge of the 900-ft mountains of sand and discovered this cracked playa, upon which a few lone Sagebrush had once somehow taken root. The scene was a depiction of harsh the isolation one feels out here in such conditions as this. Then, for a brief few minutes the sky broke open and illuminated the dune and sandstorm behind it, making for a particularly dramatic rendering of the vast desert terrain. It was one of the rarest and most exciting moments I've had in my career photographing the landscape.
Equipment: Canon 1Ds Mark III, 16-35mm f/2.8 II lens.

Being at the right place at the right time with a little luck might not be every thing but it sure helps. I would be interested in purchasing a print of this .

Such a conflict of emotions for me here. On one hand the composition is fantastic. On the other hand the processing is so heavy it’s no longer realistic. The colors are unatural, it looks like you used a tobacco colored filter.

This is really cool; the terrain looks like a giant tortoise shell; very well done indeed.

This would make a wonderful jigsaw puzzle! …or an inspirational poster…..or wallpaper for one of those HGTV decorating programs……
If an artist had painted this image, no one would believe it is real. The lines in the dried mud make a circle enfolding the dead plant and leading the viewer’s eyes to the far-away mountain and sunlight. How lucky you were to be at the right place at the right time–and how thankful I am that you shared such a perfect moment.
