Desert Prism

by Marc Adamus

An incredible display of light and textures found in this remote sandstone slot canyon. The various rich colors and hues present here are the result of how the eye, and the camera even more so, record reflections of direct light and different color temperatures onto the already colorful sandstone. I hiked a few miles out here alone four times before finally taking this shot the way I'd wanted it, just seconds before direct lighting spoils the scene from a position braced several feet off the ground against the opposing canyon walls.
Equipment: Canon 1Ds Mark III, 70-200mm f/4 L lens

I have seen lots of images of slot canyon, but all of them were full of warm tones. This is the first time I have seen an image with shades of blue.
Very original.

Fascinating picture, it looks like colored handkerchiefs draped from a ceiling. It is a lovely picture; well done.

It looks like a painting or… I don’t know what! But certainly not like anything I have ever seen before. Wow, Marc, thank you.

This is absolutely perfect! At first glance, it reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe painting–the innermost parts of an iris perhaps. But I can also see the faces of the ancients, whispering long-forgotten stories for those wise enough to hear. This would definitely be a wonderful jigsaw puzzle to be completed on a snowy wintery day.
