Blue Pool

by Orvaratli

This is the geothermal area called Hveravellir in central Iceland. The area was first inhabited by outlaws, fleeing from punishment and hiding in the mountains. This area provided some shelter and warmth during the harsh winter months. Early in the 20th century a manned weather station was constructed here, seen here on the top of the hill. Weather observers have now been replaced by automation and electronics. This pool has a striking blue color which reveals its beauty in twilight conditions. The color comes from silica rich minerals in the pool.

The dawn/dusk provides a glorious color contrast to the image. What a wonderful time to take the shot!
Congratulations Orvaratli.

Nice natural scenery.

Stunning shot. Usually the blue water comes from the reflection of the sky, making this surreal.

Thanks for the comments everybody.

Malta Photography: I use Gradual Neutral Density filters to darken the sky and thus brightening the foreground as well.
