Indian Fishermen
by Shubhankar Basu
This image is from Poovar Beach in south India. At dawn the fishermen go and drop their nets and at around 7 a.m. they start pulling them. There are anywhere from 30 to 50 men working at this and the catch is distributed among them.
Equipment: d70s + 17-70mm 2.8

This is a very interesting form of fishing; illegal in Ireland though I don’t know why.

I’m enjoying the shapes and colours in this picture. I love the overall symmetry of the arching line of men, who are themselves bent to the task of pulling the line in, these lines are set off by the comparativley straight line of the waves coming in, but this line of wave is in a constant state of folding in on itself: rising, reaching, curving and falling, the turbulence of the wave is reflected in the rolling line of cloud immediately above. There is even the detail of rippling muscle in the men’s arms and backs, you can almost feel the effort they are making in their task. Congratulations on a beautifully composed image.

That catch must weigh a lot judging by all the effort. Cool shot.

A great picture. I like to see how everybody seems to work hard to pull the nett. It seems a unique collaboration in a fisheries world. Thanks for sharing this picture…

I admire all the qualities already mentioned. I also like the men’s shadows on the sand. Most of all I like the community effort – it seems that it’s paying off…

Excellent Composition!! The rope, the people, the waves and the clouds are in perfect harmony!

The fish must be close & plentiful to be able to drag them from the shore; without boats and not even leaving land. Amazing!

the fish are not close.. they go and drop the nets in the morning around 4am and these are big nets which take a while to pull in.. but the catch is a lot enough to be shared with everyone !!

Group effort. Great scenery also.
