Kieje Hatal

by Joseph Rossbach

Kieje Hatal means night chant in the Navajo language. This image was inspired after finding this totem looking rock formation in a remote location on the Navajo Reservation. 2 exposures, the first at dusk for 2 minutes to record the movement of the clouds and pick up the soft blue glow. The second shot was... made some hours later after the sky cleared and stars revealed themselves. The second exposure is for 25 minutes at F5.6. I used my headlamp to paint the sandstone column.

Your photos are so lovely and alive! I am wondering if I could use some of them for printing Calendars; of course I must print your website (earthshots.org) with it. These calendars are my personal give-outs to my clients, not for business and if they are used for business I shall write to you again.

Many thanks and have a wonderful day!

Warmest regards

Worthwhile effort!

yes, the blend of cloud and star is like nothing I have ever seen. It almost looks like the stars are being stirred with cream.

Beautiful coloring, the stone has a golder sheen that gives it a religious effect.

The foreground illuminated brilliantly and the stars so vivid… Amazing shot!

I also thought of the sphinx. This is definitely unusual and very stirring.
