Icecap

by Wouter Boer

South Iceland near Myrdalsjokull, the icecap of the glacier covers an active volcano called Katla. The volcano erupts usually every 40 - 80 years. As the last eruption took place in 1918, scientists are monitoring the volcano very carefully. Since the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull mid April 2010, the fear exists that the neighbouring volcano Katla will erupt as well. This is a much bigger volcano with a much bigger glacier icecap. The mega floods caused by the glacial burst could flood the whole area. When hiking here the are numerous warning signs all over the area indicating the danger of an volcanic eruption.

A real sleeping tiger; thanks for taking the risk to bring us this shot.

Very good image. I like the three layers, going from a dark foreground to a very light top section. Is that the sky or part of the glacier? The figure gives the image scale and the dark clothes add to the bleakness of the scene. Well done.

Your image shows both the humbleness of man before nature and his great admiration of her. Great work!

Fantastic picture! I especially like the contrast between the ice and the skree on the other side where the hiker is standing. What an enormous mountain – I’d hate to see it blow its top.

What a fantastic photo. The loneliness of that person against the vastness of the glacier say’s it all.

The figure certainly shows the magnitude of the icecap. This could be a ‘before’ picture; shudder! Thanks for sharing the shot & information.

Thank you for sharing the scariness and the story to go with it.I have a very healthy respect
for all those adventurous photographers who journey
all over our wonderful planet to bring a glimpse
of beauty caught in a flash of Time. The colours
reinforce the suspence. You can feel this volcano is just biding it’s time to blow. Fascinating stuff.

Your amazing image truly illustrates how mankind exists precariously balanced amidst all the forces of nature. What a story you’ve told with one snapshot!
