My Kingdom

by David Lazar

A novice monk scans the horizon of the former kingdom of Mrauk-U, Myanmar (Burma). Countless temples from the 16th century dot the hills and make it a great place to explore, after a flight from Yangon and a 7 hour boat trip to arrive here.
Equipment: Nikon D700

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside of my musical world) is travelling and capturing moments of life through photography. My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

Looks Otherworldly, almost ancient.
The bright red of the monk is a good counterpoint to the green vegetation.

Speak for yourself Pauline :p
You did well just to get in the country David!
Curious to know if this monk was asked to pose or did you stumble across him. Great pic!

Very beautiful photo of landscape and human. I do get the sense that the young man is posing but he may be meditating…Who knows? Anyway, I love that bright red!

Amazing image, where we can appreciate another culture! Perfectly captured. Congratulations

I really like your observation about a unique moment that will never be captured the same way again. So true. It might be the light, the expression, the juxtaposition of elements….Thank you David.

To answer the questions about whether he is posing or not…. yes he is posing.
The monk followed me as I climbed the hilltop – maybe out of curiousity but he didnt want anything from me… I let him use my camera to take photos of the sunset of his own. I later asked him to stand at this spot at look out over the scene, and he was happy to oblige in my photo requests!

Your lucky day to have a colorfully clad companion. He must have been pleased with the shot as well. Nice work.

This is a magnificant image.
The landscape, the red robe and even the dust that covers the young monks feet.

Thanks for updating us David, but was he told to follow you?

13th March 2010 at 4:38 am

No he definitely wasnt told to follow me Sparts, but who would tell him to do so?
Unless he’s working for the government…

Yeah, that was what I was wondering. We tried to enter last year but couldn’t gain entry. Some of those that have been and I have spoken to have been shadowed their entire trip lol.

Anyway, again, great shot. Very interesting :)

Wow is right! I don’t often comment on ‘people’ images, but this one definitely tells a remarkable story.
