Mantis Eyes

by Thomas Vignaud

Mantis shrimp vision is probably the best in the world. The complexity of their eyes can attest to it. Taken in New Caledonia.

Hi Thomas, Great close up, but how good is the vision? Can you Quantify/elaborate

Amazing patterns in those complex eyes; wonderful technology. This close up is something special; keep them coming.

Anurag, check wikipedia at “mantis shrimp”, the article is really long about the eyes :)

Wow is right! I’d be interested in how you were able to get this image. How close were you to the shrimp, and was it taken in water, and is the blue coloring natural? Great dof for a close-up lens.

Fantastic colors and textures! It’s hard to tell what they are at first sight but those eyes are amazing, perfectly adapted, I’m sure, to the animal’s environment. Great photo, Thomas,as usual.

This is absolutely amazing! I don’t think mankind will ever truly appreciate all the wonders of Mother Earth, but you surely give them insight into worlds unknown to most of us. Thank you for that.
