Color Flow

by Tony Kuyper

Badlands are usually Chinle formation which dates from 200 million years ago. These sediments are the silt deposits from flowing streams and rivers. The colors likely come from chemicals that filtered through the layer long after it was buried by additional sediments. The colors in this particular place are quite dramatic. The stones in the middle ground are petrified wood.
Equipment: Canon 5D, Tamron 28-200

this is a great simplistic shot with excellent use of texture, colour, lines and layers.

That’s a great study of color. Amazing colors.
It would have been even more powerful had the blue been in the distance and the warmer tones in the foreground. But that’s just a minor “perfect world” kind of thought.

Wonderful colors of nature not often seen this dramatic. Nice capture as one is unable to determine the size of objects in the shot. The badlands are an interestening land formatioin for sure.

I’ve been a rock-hound for most of my life–my parents infected me! There is so much beauty in geological formations and in colors and shapes of rocks. This is a very nice shot!

My reaction when I saw this was an immediate, “Oh, Wow!” It’s utterly gorgeous and I would heave been so pleased to bring back something like this from an outing… It works so well as a natural abstract because of the contrasting colours and textures; the strong diagonal lines and the subtle cross-’flow’… Beautiful image, a classic and one which will bear many a return visit.
