I believe they used to be used for fishing in Japan--fishermen would tie a long cord around the bird's throat, then allow the bird to dive and fish. The cormorant could eat all the small fish it desired, but when the bird came up with something too big to swallow due to the cord, the fisherman got lunch! Great potd!
