Stoney Point
by Shawn Thompson
I arrived at Stoney Point thirty minutes before sunrise on 1-2-2010. I had checked the weather reports the night before and saw the temperature would be sub zero.
It may sound crazy, but I had been waiting for weather like this for a while. When the air temperature is much colder than the surface temperature of the water, you get a lot of steam. I was very happy to see this when I arrived.
Because of the low cloud bank on the horizon I was able to shoot well past sunrise.
To capture this shot, I balanced the camera and lens on a chunk of ice to get the low point of view. I also used the in camera timer.
Equipment: Canon 5D - 17-40L F/4

I’m glad you’re crazy enough to go to Lake Superior in January, not to mention crazy enough to use a chunk of ice in lieu of a tripod! Your fortitude rewarded you with a magnificently angry shot, seething with action. Superior is picturesque in all seasons, but winter really brings out its unique personality–you captured it perfectly.

Incredible…

You made a typical Lake Superior Rocky shore turn magical with your timing, lighting, photographic skills, and Duluth endurance. A most remarkable winter Superior shot. Well done!

This image reminds me of a celebration except in leu of steamers we have water bursting like fireworks. I’m enjoying the colours, the flow and interest of the ice.

A terific shot that makes me fell the excitement of the water. It is so good when you
can creat a mood in someone else with your shot. I find it very gratifying. Keep up the hunt for more spectacular shots.
