The Butcher
by Laura Vink
It’s a good thing that you can’t smell this place through this photo. It was absolutely disgusting, the sheep was there already for 2 days or so and I hold my breath while I was taking this photo. I loved the colours and the scene, but I wanted to go outside as soon as possible again. The first week after my holiday I simply couldn’t edit this photo because it would make me sick again. A month later it was much better. Good thing: the butcher is qualified though (see the wall behind him). Taken in Tunisia.
Equipment: Nikon D90, Tamron 10-24mm

Very strong image and technically good, but too much information for me. Your vivid description helps the viewer understand and be there with you.
Not my favorite potd, but very moving–and the butcher is quite attractive!

  2. Anurag Anurag Says:

Nice composition, Very imaginative use of the window.

How must he be keeping the flies away? :-(

  3. Su Su Says:

Wow thought i’d stepped into the wrong site for a minute there! Vivid colour and I like the the framing but the smell…………….

  4. jonathan munshi Says:

Lovely image; a refreshing change from the pristine nature photos that dominate Earthshots :) This is a particularly attractive butcher shop shot, of which I have seen many.

  5. Chris Boynton Chris Boynton Says:

Nice Life/Travel Shot Laura – at least the sheep kept perfectly still for you;-)

  6. jonathan munshi Says:

P.S. I’d recommend a little geometry correction in PS.

    finally an original photo

  8. Nikki Says:

I think this is brilliant, so much depth. It’s a refreshing change from the same old cliched shots that keep appearing on here…

  9. Pauline Jones Pauline Jones Says:

I think I’ll stick to Tesco.

  10. Chetna Says:

I love the pink and it rhymes with Vink. You were obviously meant to be there! 25 years ago I turned vegetarian for exactly the same reason. I never recovered from that smell. And they say aged meat tastes better… But this photo is GREAT. I love it. Well done and thanks for sharing pink, vink ;-)

  11. Gabrielle Flynn Says:

A welcomed change to the usual photographs here. Like another comment here I thought I had come to the wrong site. There is much beauty in the world and it is wonderful to have it portrayed. This is the flip side and a wake up call. Congratulations.

  12. Barbara Gerdemann Says:

I agree totally, finally something else than the eternal landscape photos.

I have seen simular butcher shops (flies and dust included) along the road side in Morocco and Tunesia. I can understand Chatna (comment nr. 8).

  13. Davey Says:

    Nice colors!

    Free Advertisement for Vegetarians ?

Yuck!Gag,,, Never the less….. Good composition, I’m so glad you described it. I’m sure with the color of pink and the stink a person could find this place. Like working in a salon, you get used to the smell of all the toxins…. or think of a paper mill….
Amazing what we eat isn’t it.

  16. Leslie Parsley Says:

Yummy ; ) Good thing we don’t have scratch and sniff on the Net. Love the color, the smile on the butcher’s face – obviously he’s immune to the smell – and nice portrayal of a different culture. A welcome change in subject matter.

  17. mike mike Says:

    Love the colors in here.

  18. Malta Photography Malta Photography Says:

Interesting shot, different from all others. It has its own mood and the colors and light are very well taken.

  19. Grete Says:

very interesting, never seen a shot like this! congrats!

  21. Laurie Laurie Says:

Quite unique! The photo is perfectly framed by the butcher’s window frame and pink outer wall.
I enjoy seeing pictures and learning about various cultures around the world, but I definitely appreciate my modern, American grocery store!
