Painter from Zanzibar
by David Lazar
Taken in Stone Town on Zanzibar island, Tanzania. I was wandering the alleys, and noticed this painter through a doorway. I decided to walk in and I asked if I could take his photo and he agreed. I pulled up a paint tin to rest the camera on as a tripod as it was quite dark in the room and took a few frames.
Equipment: Nikon D70s

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside my musical profession) is travelling and capturing moments of life through photography.
My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

This is the sort of thing I like to see. The landscapes here are always beautiful, of course, but the earth is just as much about the colorful people who inhabit it. Thank you.

Oh my gosh! How absolutely splendid! I am so impressed by the whole story, how marvelous are both your work and his. Two artists telling the world how things are. Ingenious. Beautiful colors and lighting….This photo really stirs the heart. Thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful man. Though he seems pensive now, the viewer can see that he really gets involved with his work–the right agent could probably sell his door, wall, and stool along with his paintings! ……..and I even get a landscape along with the human commentary–lovely potd!

Well-seen, and well-taken!

It’s all been said and I can only agree whole-heartedly – two artists showing the world it’s beauty …
Great job indeed!!
I love the hint of motion in his “painting arm” too … brings it to life and keeps “real” rather than posed

Ditto for every word said and just to add, great color harmony between the room and colors of the painting!
Putting the camera on the paint can has given a nice low to high angle.

Some talent painters have. Nice picture he is working on. Great scene.

I keep going back for another look. My first time to comment on POTD. A very fine “find”, and the natural light creates such a beautiful, ‘painterly’ look (on both subjects). Wonderful work!

Agree with all the commenters…I especially like the light coming through the window on the far left, it’s like a tiny cathedral window

A painter’s haven. Paint everywhere
What an exceptional shot.
Were you able to ask him for his name?
David Lazar
Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. It make it all worthwhile! I do remember at the time being a little nervous to just walk into his place – but it’s rewarding in the end.
Herman – I didnt ask his name, but I did compliment him on his artwork around the room.

This man is a different race, and culture than I am but we are both artists. The world is a smaller place than you think.
