Ice Cavern

by Michael Anderson

This is a scan of a 35 mm slide. In the winter of 2003, 4 friends and I set out to ski about 70 miles of the great divide route across the icefields of the Canadian Rockies. Along the way we enjoyed (suffered through?) many adventures including a rappel down an icy cliff face in 100 mph winds onto a dangerous avalanche slope, a ski across the thin ice of a thawing lake, and some of the most incredible powder skiing of my life down the face of Mons peak. This image of an ice cavern at the base of the Mons icefield seems to encapsulate the beauty, remoteness and danger I felt on that incredible adventure.

I’m awestruck by this scene! The immensity, the clarity of light, I can almost breathe the crispness of the air, the shear expanse of it all is breath taking. Like no where else on earth…. What a telling scene. I just want to look and look and look at it all. Wonderful shot! Thank you for sharing.

Just wonderful the blues even make you feel chilled, the size of the cavern is amazing. Thank you for taking us to another spot that most of us may never experience.

Utterly amazing.. like nothing I’ve seen before. Are those stars in the sky? I’m curious how you balanced the exposure with whatever your light source is in the cavern.

Amazing.
I’m dieing to know, was the light source the sun in the sky above? The scene feels like night but I can’t figure out how the four of you lit it like that if it was night.

Gorgeous. What a wonderful adventure.

this is certainly one of the best shots i have ever seen here. I am struck by the amount of balanced lighting there is everywhere. everything is clear and sharp. I might think there is some HDR in it involved but its so perfectly balanced.

Great shot! It looks to me like the photographer is standing inside the cavern facing the entrance which slopes up from the three skiers. Very unique and mystifying!

This is my favorite shot from your website! The ice at the top of the picture looks like a starry sky. Very mesmerizing. I think I might be purchasing it in the future. Congrats on the well deserved potd

This is an absolute fairy wonderland! Colors are perfect–adding humans for dimension really makes the viewer feel as if she’s in the cave with you. Thanks for taking me there.
