Flamingo Lake

by David Lazar

Lake Nakuru, Kenya. To photograph this expansive soda lake dotted with flamingos, I got as close to the water's edge as I could on the muddy banks, and used my 200mm zoom to full capacity.
Equipment: Nikon D70s

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside my musical profession) is travelling and capturing moments of life through photography. My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

You get scenes like this on the Carmargue; flamingoes are amazing birds.

David: I think this is a fantastic shot and it really appeals to me, but I have a question about how you achieved the finished article. Of the three birds in flight, the one on the left of shot and the one on the far right look identical. In the original shot, were there only two birds in flight (both on the right of the shot) and therefore you cloned the one on the far right and added it on the left to give balance? At first glance I thought you had just captured two different birds at the same point in their wing movement cycle, but after closer inspection they seem a little bit too similar (at least to my eye). Would be interested to hear from you.

Thanks,

Nick.

Love it! The pattern of reflection in the water is beautiful!

It is hard for me to imagine a bird of this shape flying very far (in the manner of a goose). Flamigos certainly are graceful on land, but look a tad comic to me in flight.

I love the colors of them.
