Bull Elk at Dream Lake

by Joseph Rossbach

This shot was made at Dream Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado in July of 2008. The animal on the shore of the lake is a bull elk. I was set up to record the reflections when this guy meandered into the scene, still counting my lucky stars. The shot is a single exposure made with a Nikon D300, 12-24mm, Singh Ray 3 stop ND grad (hard) at ISO 200.

I thought I was looking at a painting – not a photograph- then I read the notes. My congratulations.

Oh my gosh! This looks like a painting! Splendid colors and wondeful eye! I bet you were in awe of it all. Such crisp colors, can almost smell the air. Thank you for sharing.

I can’t seem to figure out where you have placed the transition of the ND Grad. Is it bang in the center? (That would be the only option I guess if its a screw on type). Can you please throw some light?

That’s a glorious golden glow you have on that one Joseph!!

Gorgeous color and scenery but, without the elk it would have been just one more pretty picture like many we see on this website.

Stunning. My vote for top nature image seen on this site so far.
You can see all your experience and hard work in this one, masterful!

Kind of funny, usually the animals leave the frame right at the last minute! You were indeed blessed this time!

The Elk looks captivated by this marvelous scene as well, Great capture!

This reminds me of those early American “New World” paintings, in which western bound artists heralded the edonic beauty of still largley unseen land.

Magnificent! I just want to keep soaking it in.
This scene is even color-coordinated, with “burnt orange” from the mountain peaks to the autumn leaves to the reflections to the highlights blended in the elk’s coat.
It’s as if God took a paintbrush…

Amazing shot, that Elk definitely adds that extra something to an already great sunrise shot.

Rocky Mountain National Park is where I fell in love with mountains at age 9. This is a beautiful shot! Very well done–congrats.

I want to dream of this! Magnificent capture. Exquisite Vista!

@ Laurie, God did paint this …and gave it to the Photographer to see…the photographer then shared it with his viewers…
