Midnight Lupine
by Orvaratli
From mid June to mid July every year the lupine flower blossoms here in Iceland. These large fields of flower can now be seen in numerous places around Iceland. An itroduced spices the lupine is spreading fast around Iceland. In many places it´s positive as it convert lifeless soil and lava sand into fertile one. In other places though, it is out-competing the low lying vegetation for sunlight and changing the flora of large areas.

How pretty! I lived in Texas, USA for many years and these are the state flower, except they call them blue bonnets! They bloom for just a few weeks from mid-March to mid-April. Many people have their picture taken in them every year. Very nice sunset also!

Awesome shot. It seems I only ever comment on your photos! You make me want to go back to Iceland!

A very nice shot but some significant viggnetting onthe top right corner, was that deliberate. The colors are very vibrant, Iceland truely must be beautiful place.

Great shot Orvaratli.

Another amazing shot; the contrast between the warm sky and the cool lupins is just right. Hopefully the lupins will do more good than harm as they are members of the pea family and are nitrogen fixers. These make them very good for the fertility of the soil.

Looks lovely to me!!!

Absolutely beautiful. I don’t want to be a sourpuss, but personally I have a problem with making an introduced species ‘look good’. They are nearly always bad news. Soil ‘improving’ species are among the worst – many rare plants depend on the lack of competition found on poor soils. The fertile soil they leave behind may enable weeds such as nettles, buddlia, ragworts etc to invade, or enable agriculture – either way altering the unspoilt vistas of iceland for ever. Now take your obvious talents and use them to show us what Iceland is really special for. Lecture over!

Nice image Balanced and well expressed. I like the sun in background the color is really intense.

This is so different from your usual photos, but it proves how versatile you are! The lupines are a beautiful example of geometry in nature, but I understand the environmental quandry. Exotic species are a mixed blessing–they are introduced for beauty, a food source, a utilitarian need, but they can eventually become a curse. Is that fog spilling into the valley from the upper left, or is that a glacier? Iceland is truly an exotic place!

Beautiful! I went to Iceland in January a few years ago and loved the icy, barren landscape. I’ll have to go back in the summer to see this.

Thanks for the comments guys.
To answer the questions you have asked. The vignetting was not deliberate but I did not harm in my opinion as it focuses attention to the sunrise and the volcano.
Allthough the volcano in the background has glaciers, it is a fog comming down that valley.

Nice place to wander around and taking photographs. Thanks for sharing the photo Orvar Atli.

That fantastic sky makes quite a contrast to the vibrant lupine, & yes, they are a very competitive species.

Reminds me of home(New Zealand), we have the same lupine problem. But they look great in the middle of nowhere like this.
