Summer Sunset from Glacier Point

by John Harrison

The picture perfect location in Yosemite made even better by the dramatic clouds and fantastic color and lighting at Sunset. This is one of those images that reminds you where to be on a Friday afternoon.
Equipment: Nikon D300, Sigma 10-20mm, Singh-Ray 2 stop ND, Gitzo Tripod
John Harrison
John Harrison is a landscape and nature photographer located in the heart of Silicon Valley in Sunnyvale, California. I'm a landscape guy. I love capturing vibrant colors in sunrises and sunsets, textures in nature, the moon, flowing water and waterfalls. I try to capture the mood of the scene and love how the light interacts with the scene. I like shooting Water, rocks, tree bark, leaves… all things in nature have a texture to me. When I'm at a location, my challenge is capturing how the scene in front of me looks, feels, sounds or smells. Even with today's equipment, it's a challenge to recreate what your eyes see. If I'm successful, the photograph will remind me of that place I want to be on a Friday afternoon. In the meantime, he is glad to have a full-time job at a hightech company in Silicon Valley and shoots all of the Bay area landscape locations in his backyard including the San Mateo Coast, Big Sur, San Francisco and Yosemite.

I don’t know… aren’t the colors too bright?
Or maybe it’s only my pc screen…

I think if you live anywhere in the hazy eastern zone of the U.S., it might be hard to envision the light and brightness of the high mountains of
western parts. The air is purer and so is the light. I’ve seen such skys in the Colorado Mountains many times. Very nice work.

And, darn it, I wish I could spell and type.

The combination of navy blue/black mountains with that incredible sky makes for one fantastic scene. Thank you.

Nice sky but too much of foreground for my liking.

Anurag–you need to visit Yosemite. There’s no such thing as too much foreground! The views are unimagined. It’s like having your primal being finally going home. The textures, colors, scents, all go together to make an unforgettable experience printed deeply on your soul. Thank you John Harrison for this spiritual trip and a perfect potd!

It is hard to make out the tree on the right. I only saw it when I took a second look wondering where the red color was coming from. I WILL visit Yosemite some day. Thanks for showing us this great place.

Wow; this is so colorful and dramatic; Yosemite is a very special place.

Thanks folks for the awesome comments!! I had no idea that I had made the Earthshots until today! I just got back from shooting waterfalls in Oregon. More images later. Hopefully I will have more to share.

Yosemite is a special place for me and quite a few others. I got engaged to my wife there long ago and now we take the kids every winter (I sneak up for regular photo shoots!)

Anurag – you have a valid comment – I was tempted to crop some off the bottom but wanted to keep that full tree on the right.
