Coin Collector
by Rajib Singha
I was waiting at the entrance of the jetty to catch the ferry to Gangasagar island when I spotted this young lad all soaked in mud. In fact he belonged to a group of local boys of his age collecting coins thrown on the bank by pilgrims on their way to Gangasagar fair.

Great photo! A beautiful child, even when covered in mud.
Katherine Lee Strassburg
This child is so beautiful and introspective that he makes the mud seem like a spa treatment! This is another view of the world that I will never see in person–thanks for bringing it to me.

I wonder what that little boy is thinking. He is quite beautiful and so is the photograph.

Beautiful and lovely boy!! I like the skin tone of the face.

its interesting how he seems to blend into the mud. almost as though he’s not there.
raised out of the mud only by the tone of his skin.

When I was a kid I was so tempted to take money out of wishing wells, the urchins in the town where I live often did. When you are his age the mud doesn’t matter, the money does.

I see a deep sadness in him. I wish I could collect all the sad and unhappy children in this world and provide them with a future.

He looks to me as if he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. A very touching photograph. Thank you.
Renee
Looks like he was having fun!
Ellen Empson
HE almost looks humiliated or embarrassed in what he was doing.
Joao Ferrer
It’s a mystery shot for me. Was he collecting coins for a living, or just getting easy money to buy “stuff”, like any other child his age? Is he humiliated or just embarrassed at being “caught” by this adult with a camera? I hope he was just having fun with his friends. India is such a rich and beautiful country. Great shot, thanks for sharing it.
