The Curiosity Of Youngsters

by Nick Saunders

What's that up there? Northern Saw-whet Owl chicks. Saskatchewan, Canada.
Equipment: Canon 40D 100-400 lens

Originally from England, I have been fascinated with wildlife since I was very young. I now spend most of my spare time looking for and photographing anything I can find on many hikes around the river, local parks and on country drives, here in Saskatchewan Canada where I now live with my wife.

I enjoy good photography, and this picture is great!
It struck me as special because I teach 5 year-olds & I read the book Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson. I would love your permission to print this picture and share it with my kids; it’s adorable!

Fantastic capture . . . that 100-400 lens is awesome for wildlife.

I’m having trouble finding up and down with those funny lookin’ little guys. Although I’ve lived all my life in areas where they live too, I’ve never seen one, chick or adult.

Thanks Nick. As always, excellent work.

Amazing capture in both clarity and content. I brought my husband–a life-long owl-lover–in to see this one. He was impressed!

Great picture! What are they looking at?! The picture quality is great, the scene couldn’t be better and the smile on my face is still there. Keep up the great work!

I fully agree with Don, the 100-400 is an incredible performer. Very unusual creatures for me. Wonderful color combination.

What a delightful picture! For non-birders–Northern Saw-Whet owls are small–7 inches tall with 17 inch wingspan. I have usually located owl nests by watching for whitewash (droppings), left-overs (bunny/rat/mouse tails) and pellets (regurgitated hair and bone capsules) under likely trees. Nick–congrats on a great photo and great powers of observation.
