Proclaiming Ownership
by May Haga
This Red-winged Blackbird was letting the world know that this was his territory and was looking for a mate.
Equipment: D300, 80-400 VR lens

Since retiring I have taken up nature photography. My main interest is birds but I do like to photograph flowers, animals and insects with an occasional landscape. My four year old granddaughter also gets a fair bit of photographic and other attention.

good shot – would be improved by centering and
vertical , your thoughts are right on , smile.

Looks like that is what he is doing. Very nice shot.

I disagree, Roy Thomas. It would not be improved by centering and making is vertical, in my opinion. I think the composition is good, but the lighting seems to detract from the shot a bit for me.

Love the way the background works here

Looks like the caption should be “Feather duster looking for a good woman to wield it!”
Well done for the shot!

I also have a special interest in birds and this is so typical. Great shot, keep up the good work.

He looks to be dangling in mid-air,I would have liked to see another background. Good looking creature all the same, should have no problem finding a mate!

The first trill of the red-winged blackbird is a definite sign of spring here in Michigan. As a birder, I like this shot just the way it is. These birds like wet places, so the blurry background is composed of more cattails and marsh grass–perfect habitat/behavior photo, May–keep up the good work.
