The Sound of Silence

by David Lazar

In the desert - one can embrace the sound of silence amidst the vast open space. Taken in Jordan early one morning in the Wadi Rum Desert.
Equipment: Nikon D70s

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside my musical profession) is travelling and capturing moments of life and beauty through photography. My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be the only person left on the Planet Earth. This photo reminds me of that thought.

Metaphorically speaking this is where we all need to be sometimes; I like the colors and I like the story.

Beautiful landscape. For me, though, there is something disconcerting about the figure in the photo – is it the color of its jacket? The size of the figure? Something seems off but I can’t put my finger on it. I almost would have liked it more without the person in it.

nice shot overall and the thought behind it but i find it too edited in my opinion.

Wow – it looks so much like Death Valley California!! It is hauntingly beautiful and I love all the earth tones. And the tiny lonely human with the bright blue jacket – hope he can find his way home ……

Planet lover – if i had taken a version without the guy in the frame then you or someone would have said: next time try it with someone in the frame to add a sense of scale!

17th April 2009 at 2:27 pm

Invokes a great sense of how small we humans really are in the great scope of things.

Outstanding capture – stunning scenery with the human element.

I do like the picture, though I wish he had his head raised, it looks forlorn.
I’m probably showing that ‘what if’ side of me!

Subtle harmonious colours and a sense of space create a peaceful atmosphere. Nice moody shot. The human element is thought provoking, and adds extra interest.

The magnificance of God is displayed in an awe inspiring tranquil beauty. He has given you the eye, the idea and the skill to touch on His creation. Thank you.
Well done!

This is a beautifully composed and titled image. I was also rattled by the modern hooded jacket, but it is a reminder that time is irrelevant. The landscape may change shape due to wind and water, and human lives come and go quickly, but Nature–the essence of life on earth, is a quiet steady heartbeat if we just listen.
