Solar Wind

by Orvaratli

The night was perfectly calm so we went to Lake Kleifarvatn. It started of quietly but around 11pm the show started. It lasted for an amazing 1 hour. Frame after frame we shot. Re-framing and re-positioning is not that common while shooting Aurora because they usually come in short bursts. This time it was different. This is what I consider my best frame from that awesome session. Settings: Aperture: f3.5 Shutter:25 sec ISO: 800
Equipment: Canon 30D - Canon EFS 10-22mm @ 10mm

Awesome picture, the dark starry sky makes it even better.

Many years have passed since I last saw the Northern Lights and I never had a good camera with me at the time. This is great . . . thanks for sharing.

You always manage to capture such amazing colors. I like the low viewpoint–it makes the rocks in the foreground look like ‘standing rocks’ awaiting the solstice, especially with the pink glow behind them. Very lovely–very calming.

What a magical shot, I hope to see these lights for myself someday. Congrats.

Auroras are such a wonderful occurrence. I have never been able to see one but am aiming to. This shot induces me to look more forward to auroras.

A class shot, very interesting subject and perfectly captured. It is one of those rare images that contain the X factor.

I’m a bit of a newy to Earth Shots, I guess I have been looking at pics on the site for 3-4 months, & have uploaded one of my own pics.

There have been some beautiful pics in the time that I have looked at the site.
This one takes my breathe away.
THANKYOU for sharing it.
Cheers Carolyn

What is the x factor? Never heard about that one.
This image is so perfect in that it is as though I am really there seeing these lights, I have seen many in my life and this is one shot that strikes me as though really being there.
Magnificent work.

Incredibly beautiful. Heavenly, ethereal. Thanks for the “lovely treat.” Magnificent.

Out of curiosity, how close are the lights? They look like they are really close… like a low flying cloud bringing down rain.

Simply stunning but far from simple.
Thank you for sharing nature and all her glory at it’s best.

All I can say is, “Wow!” This image really knocks my socks off. Such a wonderful composition and subject. Like many photographers, I dream of someday visiting a place like Iceland for the grand light show.

Ellie, the X factor is that indeterminable element that makes something or someone stand apart from the crowd. It is the wow factor, only more so. Here in G.B. we have a tv prog called X factor I believe the U.S. version is American pop idol, there are thousands of contestants and whilst the finalists may be considered good or even great, the overall winner has that special something. So I suppose it means the best of the rest. Hope that explains.

Wish I was there! Living in BC Canada, I will have to get further north one day to get the opportunity to aquire some aurora images. I hope to be able to get some images with such a great foreground as with yours! Awesome image! You should send this image into “Astronomy” magazine.

SPECTACULAR!!! The Aurora Borealis is a stunning occurrence and a vision I have longed to see myself. I am appreciative for your fascinating perspective, consternation and achievement here. The bright stars intermingled within make this so special.
