American Cuisine

by Stephen Oachs

The grace and strength of the magnificent American Bald Eagle are evident in this dramatic photograph. This image was captured mere seconds after the eagle snatched lunch from the icy February waters at the Kenai Peninsula on the southern coast of Alaska. In this photograph, the action is richly punctuated by the crystal clear spray and the expanse and position of the powerful wings. The intensity of the bird's eyes, along with its posture and angle coming off the water, convey the elegant and silent power of this beautiful creature.
Equipment: Canon 1D Mark III

Wonderful capture–for both of you! I still remember the first Bald Eagle I saw in the wild, but I still get excited each time I’m allowed the honor of viewing another. Your technical expertise really adds to the perfection of this shot–every feather is in perfect focus, while the water droplets show the speed of the moment. Great shot, Stephen, as usual!

just one question? Steve is that natural food or Bait–I live in a place where this is a common place photo!! they feed the Eagles pig and beef fat 5 days a week down at the water front then sell the photograph’s. I call it the Eagle feeding photography Factory because it happens with so much regularity.
anyhow please don’t interpret that statement in conjunction with this Well Photographed action shot of the Bald Eagle

If there was ever a photograph in motion, this is it! Beautifully dramatized shot!
Thanks to Stephen & ES for sharing.

Majestic!

@Everyone, thank you for all your kind words!

@Su – thank you! Yes, Rocky is one of my favorites too.

@planet lover – thank you…my kiva shot is becoming very popular.

@Evan Spellman – yes, there is an area in Homer Alaska where the eagles are being fed but that ended this year with the death of Jeane (the “eagle lady”) This photo was taken from a boat I chartered to take me out into the coves off the Kenia Peninsula. This was not taken at the feeding location.

Majestic. To think America almost killed this enigmatic creature off to extinction in the 1970′s with chemicals is unbelievable. They have come back strong. GREAT SHOT Stepehen!

Maybe hard to believe, but there was an eagle that looked like this one on our property. it had a fish in its talons and was on top of our utility pole. It was eyeing a kitten we had at the time, and the kitten was looking back at it fearfully. After a few moments, it flew off with the fish ….. thankfully!
