Elusive Jaguar

by Will Burrard-Lucas

We spent nearly a week looking for Jaguars along the banks of the Cuiaba River in Brazil. Our trip coincided with a cold front and for days there was little wildlife. On our penultimate day, the sun finally appeared and my patience was rewarded by an incredible encounter with this beautiful and elusive jaguar!

Fantastic portrait of a hunter! You have a way of making us one with the animal. We’re at eye level, with the jungle even reflected in the water. Your artistic ability is matched only by your mastery of the English language. (I usually only find ‘penultimate’ on Jeopardy!)

What an incredible shot, You have captured his stealth. Lucky that Jaguar was focused on his next meal and not on you!

You go to so much trouble to get a good shot; thanks for this one.

A beautiful shot that brings the viewer into the animal’s natural environment. It is more than a potrait, it immerses the viewer into that world. I love the eye level of the shot, the water present, and most of all the expression of the jaguar, ambiguous to your presence. What time and patience this took – and it paid off well!! Congratulations on a fantastic POTD !!

Beautiful picture! I don’t remember ever seeing a cat, big or small, in the water. What a great catch! The best thing is the jaguar came unharmed out of this encounter, and so did Will.

This is a tremendous image. Excellent colours and DOF. My only criticism, (meant to be constructive, of course) is that i wish you had been able to catch the cat’s eye. It establishes a deeper relationship between the subject and the viewer. That notwithstanding, this is a great shot and one to be proud of.

What an incredible photo! The jaguar is not an easy subject to find in the jungle. Great composition and colors too :)
