Dune

by David Lazar

In Baharia, Egypt, I hired a driver to take me out to some isolated sand dunes.

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside my musical profession) is travelling and capturing moments of life and beauty through photography. My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

Wow just beautiful! the soft mustard yellow dunes and the bluest blue of skies, with of course a dash of cloud. Just perfect, my new computer wallpaper:)

Beautiful and makes you feel goods inside and out.

A most striking image, though it’s straining my believability factor. I associate clouds like that with very cold temperatures, and most overhead. So… is it real

Simply beautiful. The lines leading throughout the dunes, the colors throughout the photo and the composition is technically perfect. What an amazing scene. Congratulations.

Kirk – that’s the real sky captured – in winter the deserts have extradinary skies. Of course it’s enhanced somewhat, but it’s not composited if that’s what you mean.

A very exquisitely composed image. However the color scheme is a bit drab. Lots of color shifts in the highlights, greenish yellows etc.
Not meaning to be negative here. It seems to be, what by now I seem to have concluded, to be associated with the D70 color gamut. I feel it has a very limited and flat color gamut. Since you are in photoshop(I presume) you might try to import the D3oo profiles to D70 in ACR for more vibrant colors. Just my 2 cents.

The colors are so vivid and I love the different hues and the way they contrast. The clouds and sunlight are just perfect. Looks so warm! Congratulations on a beautiful photo!!

Wonderful colours.

We have had dune shots before but this is a nice one; I like the way the ripples in the sand are reflected in the clouds.

very nice and simple shot. I like the angles at which dissect the whole image.

The lines of the sand are quite nice.

Nice shot however I feel the jetstream lets the photo down.

20th March 2009 at 11:21 am

so Bruce you want me to clonestamp the jetstream out? That would be even more natural and realistic than it already is!

Love the dune, hate the sky. The blue is too dark at the top and the contrast with the yellow below is almost unpleasant to the eye.

Dear we are a picky lot. Thanks David, for the reply — Now that I “believe” the image I find it truly compelling. We normally think of deserts as hot places, so I find the combination of “hot” sand and “cold” winter sky a most unusual and quite dramatic.

David, ignore the detractors here. This is a great photograph. Just maybe have another go at post processing and don’t go quite so dark with the blue. A worthy winner.

BTW, ALEX – Do you ever leave a pleasant comment?

David, love this photo! As a collage artist, the colors and textures are beautiful so just ignore all those other unhelpful critics. If Alex thinks it isn’t very original he should take it up with God.

The colors are outstanding! Who would have thought to combine royal blue & mustard colors,Spring wear perhaps?

I love the color contrast here. And how Blue sky well fits with the sand.

Wow, everyone’s a critic. This photo is exquisite. I wouldn’t change a thing.

This photo has its own quality. Perfect composition and a painterly looking sky. There is a sort of wild unusual feel not normally associated with this sort of shot. Also the photographer gave further feedback and responded to comments and made clarifications. This I appreciate it makes the whole thing so much more interesting. It also shows good manners IMHO. Good on yer David.
