Badwater Sunrise
by Kevin Pieper
We made a quick side trip to Death Valley on our journey. I was a bit worried about how Badwater would look given the floods, but the polygons were great! We were hoping for a nice sunrise at Badwater and I wasn't disappointed. It's amazing how much Badwater has changed with regards to the polygon formation in the year since I had been there last.

Good place, good color, great depth of field. Death Valley is always amazing. Very nice POTD!

This is a beautiful place, despite its name. You captured this beautifully, likewise. The lines of the polygons keep ones eyes within the frame and the colorful sunrise colors atop the peak is like icing on the cake. Great job and congratulations!

Great photo. I love the way the patterns in the polygons are partially repeated in the valleys in the foothills. Love the depth of field, the color and the classic proportion of the lakebed to the rest of the photo.

A very mature subject, but your handling of the shot specially the sublime colors give the shot a really fresh look.
Congratulations, Kevin.

I like the line of light covering the tops of the mountains and as for the polygons, I’ve never seen them before. It would be helpful to us who do not live in the USA and have never had the privilege of seeing these things to have a little more explanation. I thought death valley was hot and dry, I never knew it had a winter.

I’m with Pauline, coming from the UK, I dont know about polygons or why they are different from last year and I too thought that Death Valley was extremeley hot. I guess thats why its called Earth shots, we can learn something each day about our world. Love the texture of the foreground and the colours on the ridge. Congrats.

Yes, this is a fantastic shot!! I love how it shows some of the beauty of Death Valley. I used to live in the same county, and Death Valley is very hot, with temperatures at least 120 degrees most days in the summer. It is most beautiful (and bearable) in spring when there are even wildflowers. It is a huge area with many interesting rock formations. This picture makes me want to go there. There is alot of history there also. Thanks for the great POTD !!!!

For those who want more info, the National Park Service has a great website for Death Valley National Monument. The salt pan on the desert floor is 20 miles by 5 miles–something which can’t be captured in a photo!

I will have to look into this more. It is incredible how they are formed – like wave edges folding over. Excellent capture!
