What’s Around The Corner
by Kevin McNeal
This is another image from Ruby Beach along the Olympic Peninsula. I really liked how the last light was hitting the distant haystack and creating a nice warm glow. To achieve the wave action I kept my shutter speed at 0.5 sec to get the longer streaks. I tried to accentuate the contrast between the cool tones of the blues and the warmer light on the haystack together.
Equipment: Canon 5D 17-40L

I’v seen this image on your website many times and have always admired it.
Really would like to thank you for the technical details, and for sharing your thought process behind planning the shot. I wish other submitters were equally forthcoming. It makes visiting Earthshots that much more interesting.
I would never have known it was a haystack. Looks just like another rock cliff!

I agree with Anurag about the technical details. It is a well thought out shot, though the foreground takes up 50% of the picture and all the rest of the detail has to fit into the other 50%. Following the rule of thirds in this case might have been better.

Another fantastic image from Kevin!! Nice job! Great composition, lighting and mood. The water swirling right at you wants to make you jump out of the way! the colors really work for me. Keep shooting! John

I really like the sleek movement of the water contrasted with the still sturdy rocks, along with the color contrasts also. The movement of the water directs the eye from cool water, to warm rocks, to the multi-colored vibrant sunset.
Congratulations!

as usual stunning Kevin. it really looks great and the long shutter speed effect is really cool and moderate. Nice Job.

I visit Earthshots to travel around the world and see through the eyes and words of the photographers and picture takers the beautiful places, animals, plants and people of this Earth. I’m not a photographer so the emotional effect of the photos stays with me a lot longer than any technical details. But I agree that they should be provided. Beautiful picture!

I love this photo. In regards to Pauline Jones comment, this photo still looks great when you crop out the bottom third and end up with a square format. GREAT SHOT!!

At first the water reminds me of captured high speed driving, but looking closely, this shot has a very calming effect.Thank you.

Awesome shot, Kevin. The horizon is in the top “third” of the frame. So, I don’t understand how anyone can say that you didn’t follow the rule of thirds. Also, the comp fulls the viewers eye into the frame, and up to the curve. Great job!!

Fabulous. Your foresight and planning really paid off. A beautiful image captured here. Congratulations!!!

Good exposure but I am not sure about the composition. Something just not right…..but what can you do…move one of the rocks….
