Monument Valley Sunset

by Marcel Van der Horst

A destination I looked forward to on my trip to the USA, that I timed specifically to get there at sunset. I battled for prime tripod position to find the best light was after the sun went down and all the other photographers left. The sky was purple because of the dust in the air and with moon nicely positioned over one of the Buttes.
Equipment: Canon EOS50D, Tamron 17-50mm

This is the perfect potd for me, as I am reading a Tony Hillerman novel set in the four corners area. Twilight is my favorite time of day, and perhaps because I was born in the desert, I am drawn to images like this. You have captured it perfectly–just as God created it. Thanks for this one!

I fully agree with Katherine that you “captured it perfectly-just as God created it”. We were there this past summer and I humbly admit, never did we capture this as beautiful as you did. Gorgeous!!! Technically a perfect shot! Congratulations!!!

Great shot, it gives all the warmth out and the moon in the far showing its glaze. great shot indeed. It looks a little over saturated though.

This is a good capture of a image seen a thousand times before. Pays to hang around though.

Great shot, good that you stayed, despite of the lonlyness, to capture this lovely shot! It felt to me almost as if the moon was the main source of light, because of thecircular shape of the ligh, on the rocky thing in the middle. But that was gone as soon as it came. Congratulations on your POTD!

I know many pictures have been taken of this place, but I have never seen one with such a surreal “otherworldly” quality to it. I think it is definately the moon, but also the way the “imperfect” section of the Butte is highlighted, like a secret passageway…. Congratulations on your POTD!!

Great colors, but If you pull up the foregroung a bit in PS or(would have used a GND filter during capture), I feel it would have been an even more powerful image.

This is so well composed, capturing vivid, warm colors against the moonlit sky. Well thought, great shot.
