Castles in the Sand

by Bill McFall

By waking up early for the sunrise on a camping trip with friends, I was rewarded by one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.
Equipment: Nikon D50

I've been shooting nature photography for around 25 years and still get a rush when searching for a beautiful landscape. I enjoy sharing my love of nature with other people. My focus is in landscape photography but will venture into other areas as they present themselves to me. I welcome any comments, good or bad about my work.

This is an amazing image and I am totally unsure as to the scale of the image. I think I am looking at something quite grand in scale and that the live ojects are fairly large trees, but I am not sure. The light is wonderful!

Sunrises can be so rewarding, can’t they? You have managed to catch the perfect moment when the contrast is perfect! The strong sunlight makes the central spires look luminescent between the shaded foreground and background. You also chose a view with contrasting smooth and rugged shapes along with rugged other-worldly trees. Wonderful color–wonderful potd. Thanks so much.

I presume these are the hoodoos at Bryce Canyon? This is a beautiful shot of the hoodoos, and I love the glow of the lighting you captured.

The way these rock formations are glowing with color reminds me of undersea coral close to the surface with the sunlight reflecting from it. Such a beautiful shot and the imaginative title just adds to the magical quality. Congratulations on your POTD !!!

This is an amazing image but where is it? You don’t tell us anything about it.

No doubt on site this was an awesome sight as the colour of light is quite impressive though this image does’nt quite convey what it must have been like to be their…..like Rannoch Moor in Scotland though this area must be the most photographed in the US.

A superb shot. Like many, I have been and taken the usual standard photos of Bryce Canyon you get to see on the package holidays, but have never before seen such a lovely photo taken at dawn or ealy morning. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Extraordinary catch on lighting! Great comp as you catch the jagged angles of the tops of these on one side, yet careful to include the slope at top so the eye feels fullfilled.

Extraordinary formations!Thanks for sharing.

I’m sure that is Bryce Canyon. It would be a nice gesture to tell people where you got the shot. I like the lighting.

Sorry folks, I thought I included information about the image. Maybe Earthshots forgot to include it. Yes, this is Bryce Canyon in the southwestern part of the U.S. There are so many wonderful state and national parks in this part of the country that I could never run out of beautiful landscapes of photograph.

Nice shot that looks almost otherworldly. Creatures could pop out from behind a rock formation at any moment.

Nice contrast with the darker background.
