Waiting to Hatch
by Chris
A photo opportunity can be anywhere, especially in the macro world. This was taken in our garden. The texture of the paperbark acacia adds to the unusual scene.
Equipment: Canon EOS 50D 60mm f/2.8 Macro
Chris
Photography is a passion that hopes to capture everything as it is, should be and can be. I have particular favour for the planets natural gifts (but mainly in Africa).

  2. Anurag Anurag Says:

Truly top class. What an awesome lens the 60mm macro is!
Great focus. I know how difficult macro shots are, specially of insects as they rarely stay still for long. Since this spider was in the process of hatching it must have been less mobile. This is one of the very best macros I have seen in a long time and certainly very unique. This image is in the league of Animal planet / Natgeo et al.

First time I have ever seen a spider hatching. Good detail. Congrats on POTD!

  4. Pauline Jones Pauline Jones Says:

This is a very good shot; you have the focus just right. Mother spiders carrying their young in their jaws is a common sight in the summer but not one we notice very often. Each of those little round eggs will produce a really tiny, fully formed version of the mother. Spider technology is awesome, the pholcus in our bathroom play complicated courting rhythms to each other, have their own social boundaries, can see and balance on invisible threads that are for their weight stronger than steel, and despite being spindly and not easily noticed they carry the most powerful venom in the spider world. Fortunately they can’t bite through human skin; but of they ever mutate….

Wow! I’ll pay more attention to these spiders now and see if I catch a glimpse of one hatching. Great picture, Chris. And thanks to Pauline for the very interesting information.

This is a SUPERB PHOTOGRAPH! Very well-deserving of POTD, but moreover, this is in EVERYONE’S back YARD. WE MUST appreciate the life brimming beneath our feet, and be more mindful of that which is hidden, but teems with life, unseen and unnoticed by us all.

  17. mike mike Says:

He blends right into the area.
