The Guardian

by Tien-Chien Chen

This canyon is probably the most reachable but at the same time most photogenic one in southern Utah. At the opening of the canyon are two giant maple trees. Observing the shifting of light inside any slot canyon is as interesting and exciting as it could get. I always love the soft glow on the wall that gets light reflected from walls receiving the direct light. In this case the wall on the right hand side received the warm light reflected from the left hand side. I waited two hours before the light just shifted out of the opening of the canyon so that the harshly lit side is out of the view. The maple tree at the same time still received enough light to distinguish itself from the huge wall in the background.
Equipment: Canon 5D + EF 24-70mm f/2.8L. 70mm 3.2sec at f/20 with Grad ND 0.9, ISO100, tripod.

This is gorgeous. Utah does have the best slot canyons, I don’t recall seeing this one. Thank you for sharing. Simply beautiful. Congratulations on a well deserved POTD!

Yes, besides the beautiful photo with superb lighting, COLORS (WOW), and composition there is the emotional effect which goes nicely with the title. And your written description adds to the feeling of visiting there. Congratulations and thanks!!

The coloring is gorgeous; however you do have a lot of red/black on the left hand side foreground, it would have been difficult to get rid of that; the only thing you could have done is move forward a few feet.

I’ve got the wdget on my dashboard, and when I saw this I was amazed! I just clicked and put this comment here, right away! Th reddish colours look unreal, but they are real, right? LOVE this image.

This is a stunning POD! I love the colors. I feel like I’m there, so much so that I really want to move forward and see more up ahead and higher up the far wall!

Wonderful potd. I think the exposure is perfect, the framing is wonderful–couldn’t think of any possible improvement. The colors in Utah beg to be put on paper, but seldom have I seen anyone capture them as well as this. Congrats. Wouldn’t it be a great place for a very private wedding?
