Portal

by Kirk Jordan

Folks who read fantasy or science fiction may join me in seeing a "portal" to another world. This is a straight, but slightly over-exposed shot, twenty seconds at night with a drippy fog. Illumination is furnished by way of a streetlamp.
Equipment: Nikon D-300, 16-85 zoom

Kirk Jordan is a photographer for the State of Arkansas. As is, my day job involves a lot of grip and grins of persons in suits, so I relish the after-hours photo hobby when I frame Arkansas' flora and fauna. I particularly like to take pictures of natural things in less conventional ways. I try to press beyond pure naturalism, to suggest the blending of the material and spiritual worlds.

What an excellent image with description to go with it. I don’t read fantasy or science fiction, but do see a “portal” to another world. Nice moody shot. Congratulations on your POTD!

Perfect name for an imaginative potd. Is this a close encounter with extra-terrestrials or is this the eternal light into which we all must pass? I especially like the dark central tree, elongated by its own shadow.

Had it not been for the description one would take it to be the sunrise!

My goodness . . . is it some place in Heaven? What an excellent shot I love the colour and the rays of light and its shadow. Fantastic work.

I like the colors; I thought this was a sunset, then I learned that you actually went to a lot of trouble to take this picture; well done.

I agree with some comments. I first thought it was a sunrise or a sunset. I love the colours and the way you made the central tree important. Congratulations !

great shot indeed. Very artistic and creative shot. The color is great and the over exposure is good and balanced.

Either way, this is a beautiful shot. Whether one looks at it from an ‘alien portal’ perspective, or simply the sunrise perspective, it’s engaging and well taken. One is able to see it either way, the mark of a great photograph!

Beautiful and mysterious.
The light draws your vision into the depths of the scene, wondering where it will take you.
