Palouse Falls Sunset
by Kevin McNeal
This was taken near the Palouse. I had been here several times but never got any luck when it came to weather. I have been wanting to combine the longer exposure with the sunset colors. I finally got some luck here.
Equipment: Canon 5D

Interesting tones. They don’t look the least bit natural though. Are they ??

Great shot Kevin! I live here in Whitman County and have never seen a finer picture of the falls.
Your persistance has paid off, well done.
I especialy like the swirling water below the falls captured with the longer exposure.

Amazing color. Is it still ‘Alpen-glow’ if we’re not in the Alps? I almost thought this was in Grand Canyon, yet in all my years of reading Arizona Highways Mag., I’ve never heard of this falls. Imagine my surprise to discover it’s in Washingon! You have framed the landscape perfectly and used an exposure which allows the low light of evening to warm and reflect the purple clouds from the rocks deep in the canyon. Kudos–your web-site is terrific. Keep sharing your world with us!

Hey Kevin, fancy seeing you here! GREAT SHOT! I’m be lying if I said I wasnt jealous…this is one of those places I’ve been wanting to visit for some time now. I’m hoping to get up that way at the end of March with Ryan Dyar (do you know him?) Maybe if you’re around we can connect on a shoot. I’d LOVE to hit ONP.
Congrats!

WOW! This is gorgeous! Technically PERFECT!!! Congratulations on your long awaited capture (patience has certainly paid off in your case) and a well deserved POTD!

What a grand landscape image, Kevin. I really love the high key rendering of the falls, The really long exposure which has brought out the circular flow of water in the pool so beautifully. It really looks like water is pouring into a saucepan from a large tap!
I regard you very highly and here is the perfect example why.

This is an amazing shot but the colors look saturated; are they genuine?
Alex
Great combination of colors and framing. The title could be “Marineris Valley” on Mars, after they finally discover water.

very good shot indeed and mother nature helped in too. Although through the long exposure you managed to get such a nice effect on the water, the clouds were at a standstill else they would be motion blurred. Very nice colors and clarity. well done.

Seems irrealistic. Splendid ! Thank you !

One amazing location and one good rendition of it. There must be an image to take which ever way you look. It could be a long trip and a ton of film or media cards to carry. I wouldn’t know where to hook up my tripod first.

Amazing!

Amazing. What a volume of water. It must be gushing at incredible speed to shoot out like that. Is this one of theose things where you reaped color after it was fading by extended exposure?

What an amazing shot. Great colours and exposure. Where is this location by the way…could be a great holiday destination….once the £ picks that is….?

Thank you so much everyone for the insightful comments and suggestions.
Pauline – I visited this places several times from here waiting for the right sunset. I had many images just like this just missing the color to really give it the impact needed – so I was happy finally to get the color ! So in short this is genuine.
Malta photography – thank you as well – I do have some longer exposures in here where the clouds did begin to show motion but this is the one I choose with the best balance.
