Sapphirine Horizon
by Stephen Oachs
Pyramid Lake is an idyllic oasis in a remote area of desert on the Paiute Reservation, about thirty five miles northeast of Reno, Nevada. This endorheic (self-contained) salt lake is 350 feet at its deepest, with a surface that stretches 15 miles long and 11 miles wide.
Taken from the southeast side of the lake, this photograph beautifully captures the rich sapphirine colors of a sunset preparing for an oncoming desert storm.
Equipment: Canon 1Ds Mark III

There are more of these images coming through than you can shake a stick at. Some are good and some not so good. This shot is one of the better ones with spot on exposure and excellent composition. Very nice indeed.

Sorry but too many pictures of rocks in the water… isn’t it possible there are more interesting, original subjects to show in this web site?
jeff

This is a beautiful photo and a lovely way to end 2008–a peaceful sunset. The colors of water and sky are perfect. Thank you, Stephen, for the rocks and water–I love it!

Beautifully done and technically right on!

This picture is fantastic. Anyone who thinks all rocks look alike just isn’t paying attention. The colors are just unbelievably great, and the way the rocks in the foreground are focused upon, instead of made to look “misty” or “blurry”, adds to the crispness and cleanness of the overall photo. The mood created is serene and spiritual. Congratulations!

Excellent way to finish off 2008. With a reflective, rocky shoreline, complete with a dock to center and somehow balance it all out. Personally, I LOVE the shot!
