Mother Natures Canvas

by Bill McFall

Spring of 2007 was a great year for wildflowers in southern California if you were lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. This was my first time at this location and had no idea it would be this good. So I felt like a kid in a candy store, shooting away for hours among this amazing display of wildflowers.
Equipment: Nikon D50, AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens

I've been shooting nature photography for around 25 years and still get a rush when searching for a beautiful landscape. I enjoy sharing my love of nature with other people. My focus is in landscape photography but will venture into other areas as they present themselves to me. I welcome any comments, good or bad about my work.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is magnificent–a riot of spring flowers thick as paint on a canvas. You chose a view with a vague horizontal striped effect. From your web-site, I would guess that this is near the Carrizo Plains, great for flowers, birds, and Native American rock art. You have a good eye. Keep the pics coming!

Simply beautiful. A gorgeous view and excellent color and composition. Congrats on your POTD!

You could also try a variation with horizontal camera movement.

Finally a good picture after a few days of boring winter scenery! Great colors, great composition, good job!

Wonderful shot and the following is in now way intended to be a criticism, more a reply to Alex above and a plea to the webmaster. I think the shot of the day, particularly if it is a landscape shot, should generally try and reflect the time of year. Let’s have the spring shots like this (2007!?!) in spring. This will encourage people to try new things year round. Too many of my friends give up on winter but there are great shots to be taken out there. I suppose a flower shot once in a while is nice to brighten things up though. Just a thought. Let’s make the shot of the day, just that, a shot of the day.

Very beautiful colors ! It made my screen saturate :)

nice shot overall. but it is too stationary for my likes even though it does transmit a sense of life and well being.

In the depths of winter it is nice to be reminded that scenes like this are only months away.

I enjoyed the shot and am envious of the hours of good images you were able to collect. Those of us in the Northern Hemishpere may forget that it is spring for our fellow photographers to our south. It is hard to be seasonal for a global community!

beautiful colours and great wildflowers..would love to get there one day…just in response to Mark…when it is winter/autumn in the Northern hemisphere…it is spring/summer “down under”… so really..the shots..no matter what season..are valid somewhere in this wonderful world of ours..congrats Bill on POTD

Yep. It’s Earth Shots, not Northern Hemisphere shots! Lovely flowers.

Beautiful colors, Nature can make an elaborate garden!
Are those poppies scattered throughout the area?

They look like poppies to me of the blue and red kind!

The photo made me smile. A reminder of what’s to come in the next season. Something to look foward to.

This is a very nice and bright, colorful spring scene, and it is warmly received and very welcome in my neck of the woods at this time.

I still don’t know why shot’s from spring 2007 are relevant. Point taken about the hemispheres though. Sorry! In my defence I was responding to someone who was ‘sick of boring winter shots’.

I was sooooooooo glad for a colorful meadow potd! Those of us who live in snow country, though we agree that it can be beautiful, can have strong withdrawal symptoms from flowers and grass. One thing I like best about this site is that the photos are so varied. I also find that photos from around the world can look very much like home, making this truly a lovely planet to call home!

Wow! Thank you all for such warm comments. Any constructive suggestions are welcome. I want to take more photos in winter, but alas, I don’t have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. So I end up packing up our Honda Civic with gear, and exploring California in spring and autumn.
