Storm Clouds at Sunset

by Casey Chinn

I caught this scene as I was driving home one evening. The setting sun was lighting up the bottoms of gathering storm clouds with a beautiful orange light, and the moon hung in the sky above.

Wow, lucky you to have such fantastic sunsets with so much color, and then to have captured it with the moon. Great job!!! Excellent composition and exposure. Congratulations on a nice POTD!

Wow! What a sky! This was so beautiful that it inspired me to check out your website, which was truly FANTASTIC!!!!!! I especially love the slot canyon photos. Your use of light is spectacular. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing photo. It’s unusual to be able to see the blue sky and moon with such a threatening storm cloud moving in. Marvelous colors in the turbulence. This would be good on one of the weather calendars!

I bet that put a little fear and jubilation in your ride. (out an airplane I assume?)

Very, very intriguing! Storms in some areas do have a way of sneaking up on you. I imagine it is like that in Colorado.

Thanks for all the great comments on my first photo published on Earthshots. I’ll clarify the details of the shot. I live on the front range of the rockies where the mountains and plains meet. In the summer, afternoon storms brew over the mountains and move out over the plains where they sometimes grow to unbelievable heights. I was on a hilltop looking southeast over the plains and the setting sun was behind me. I didn’t have any great foreground elements to use so I just concentrated on the sky. I had been shooting the sky for a while and it just kept getting better and better as the sun set behind me and started to light up the bottom of the clouds with orange light. I caught a few shots before it covered up the moon.

Very unusual, almost looks like two different shots stacked one upon the other.
Congratulations.
