Maumelle River

by John Carroll

Spring flow on the Maumelle River in central Arkansas. This is a unique place where the river flows through a cypress tree grove, with numerous cypress roots in the middle of the river.

Howdy Neighbor – I guess it takes a world wide Photo of the Day submission to realize who lives in my backyard. (I live in Conway just minutes away.) I will revisit your blog and hope we meet on an Ouichita trail somewhere.

Very unusual habitat. I like the exposure you used, as the swirling water softens the dark jutting roots. This river would make a great location for either a science fiction movie or one of those ‘How the Earth Began’ programs on the Nature Channel! One question–why so dismal, when you say each day gets more interesting?

Strange shot, you have to look twice to work out what it is, but I like it, Congrats.

The timing of the shot makes the highlights in the river water look like hair; very unusual.

So interesting, other-worldly, and intriguing! It makes me wonder how this scene came to be. From your title, I take it the river floods the grove every spring but is dry the rest of the year. The roots are there, but the trees are dead, yes? If so, I guess they don’t mind getting wet. Thanks for the POTD.

The forest must have gotten swamped at one time & now the river rules! An unusual shot, I like it a lot.

I actually feel as if I am by the bank of the river and can hear the rushing of the water and the feel energy. Thanks for taking me away.

Thank you to everyone for the comments and feedback. The Cypress trees are very much alive. In this location, Cypress trees line the banks of the river and send vertical roots up into the middle of the river. Typically the water is moving more slowly; this was taken after heavy rains when the water was up. Thanks again!
