Evening Color

by Dennis Walton

The reflection was perfect and we finally got some alpenglow to complete the scene! Mt Shuksan | Picture Lake
Equipment: Canon EOS 5D

A friend from Houston was visiting me here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest this week. I took him up to the mountains to photograph sunset at Picture Lake. We witnessed one of the calmest days I have seen! shutter: 1/6 sec aperture: f/18 GND Filter

Absolutely breath-taking! There’s nothing like a sunset in the mountains, where the light bounces back and forth off the rocks and snow and water. The perfectly still water lends a real sense of calm. Your composition makes the most of the clouds and their reflections making a circular motion drawing us like a whirlpool toward the mountain. Wonderful!

Simply beautiful! The colors along with the reflection are a perfect blend. This photo is technically excellent with one of the better compositions I’ve seen in a while. Congrats on this capture!!!!

The circular lines as commented by Katherine do produce an interesting effect.
Just curious that if you were using a GND then how come the gradient from dark to light in the sky is exactly replicated in the reflection of the sky in the water.

Very nice image. I like your blues and purples together with the wisp of clouds. Keep shooting! John

It’s so incredibly calm that if you folded the picture, the lake would pass for the sky!

to anurag. The GND helped balance the sky to the reflection. The reflection was initially darker by a couple of stops.
