Living in the Monet
by Kirk Jordan
Water Lily in a garden pond, Little Rock, AR.
I titled this photo 'Living in the Monet' in recognition of French Impressionist Claude Monet who loved to paint water lilies. While I did use Photoshop to tweak the contrast and clean up specks floating on the water surface, the vibrant color of this setting is all natural and results from the confluence of two temperatures of light. The lilies themselves were bathed in the blue of setting-day shade, while a near brick building caught the full warmth of the setting sun and back lit the lilies as reflected on the water's surface.
Equipment: Nikon D-300, 70-300 zoom

Kirk Jordan is a photographer for the State of Arkansas.
As is, my day job involves a lot of grip and grins of persons in suits, so I relish the after-hours photo 'hobby' when I frame Arkansas' flora and fauna. I particularly like to take pictures of natural things in less conventional ways. I try to press beyond pure naturalism, to suggest the blending of the material and spiritual worlds.

Very unusual shot. The colors really play games with my eyes. You allow us a glimpse under the water to see the new buds reaching for the light, while the light itself is bent and bounced down through the water. Perfect title–I like it!

Fantastic: this is what photography is for!
After several days of boring, obvious shots, finally something artistic, creative and original.

The title alone was enough to make this awesome when I saw it in my feed reader… and then there’s a beautiful photograph to go along with it!
As for it being better than Monet… well, I think we’re talking about two entirely different media, no? That would be like comparing apples and oranges.
