Lady Bugs on Fern
by Jacob Maentz
This shot was take at Muir Woods near San Francisco, California. I liked the contrast of the red lady bugs on the green fern. There were thousands of lady bugs aggregating on a dead tree during my visit to the National Monument, October 2008.
Equipment: Nikon D80

Nice ! it’s like they are trying to find how to continue their way to the right.
I think there is a spider on the other side of the leaf

An excellent study.

Great shot and colors. Highly contrasting, it communicates a strong feeling of calmness. Interesting about the insects, the lady bugs in my country do not have that pointed shape at the back end of the wings. I liked your website and philosophy too, I think we share the same Idea.

Nice shot Jacob, interesting to see the different colour variations(black spots on the lady bugs)maybe a closer macro shot might have given a softer look to the fern leaf, however still a very nice shot keep up the good work!

The ladybugs are wonderful; less leaf would have shown the beautiful contrasting colors just as well.

I love it! It’s perfect just as it is. So many people rush through life totally oblivious to the precious little miracles of nature. Thank you for noticing and sharing.

Lovely colors. I prefer the ladybugs stay outdoors. They invaded my house last year; thankfully, I saw none this year.

Apart from all that has been already said I Really like how the leaf is jutting into the frame like an arrow. Of course great colors.
Slightly higher DOF to keep the ladybird on the right also in focus is desirable.
What lens are you using Jacob?

This time of year the ladybugs will be trying to find somewhere to overwinter; they tend to come together in big groups.

Thanks everyone for your comments…Anurag, i used a 60mm 2.8 macro for this shot. It was in a relatively dark area and I wasn’t using a tripod, so my DOF couldn’t be too high. Plus the ladybugs were moving fast!

When ever I see a lady bug I always move it out of harm’s way. If one lands on me I move it to a safe place. The photo is a great shot of the pair..
