Indian Chef
by David Lazar
On Chowpatty Beach (in Mumbai, India), there is a famous area with some foodstalls and expert chefs - preparing snacks and meals to be eaten at the beach. This is especially popular at night.
The dish 'bhelpuri' is popular - with crunchy puffed rice, tomatoes, onions and chilis added to the base, chutneys (made mainly of dates and tamarind) and a green spicy chutney made of coriander leaves.
Equipment: Nikon D70s

I'm a photographer from Brisbane, Australia - and one of the joys for me (outside my musical profession) is travelling and capturing moments of life and beauty through photography.
My favourite styles of photography: Portraiture and landscape. Also, in general, I prefer shots which contain an element of 'cannot be captured exactly again'; that is expressive people shots, action shots and any scenario with a unique aspect to it.

Your use of the dizzying perspective and focus make me feel as if I am at the market with you. We can tell that even though it appears to be a candid shot, it was actually well planned. The chef’s smile is a real happy bonus.

Nothing like the smile of a person enjoying the daily “grind” of making a living doing what this person obviously seems happy to do and probably earn enough to be in that state. “Action is eloquence.”(Shakespeare)

I love this shot. Almost feels like we’re running and diving towards the chef’s delicious dish.

Lovely use of perspective and zoom blur. Good management of exposure.
Very very unusual for the vendor (chef) to wear a surgical cap & mask at Chowpatty, (unless Mumbai has changed since the past 10 years, when I was there).

Nicely done! This is making me hungry…

I have only just woken up, but I could still eat that!

Love the motion in this, makes it seem a fast paced environment!

I love this shot. Lots of movement and life. Great colour too. I think the technical term is a ‘beard snood’ and they are fairly common in the catering industry.

This shot definitely has a unique aspect and as food the food it sounds great; can I join you?

very nice shot and the mood is perfect. I like the blur and the look on the face of the cook. I must say its a wonderful shot although I feel that the bulb is fighting for attention but hey its not always possible to move things right.

Sounds delicious! I loved this shot, the food, the ambience. All in all, a great experience on this fine autumn morning… Thanks for sharing, David. And, thanks to Mark for enriching my vocabulary: I never heard the term “beard snood” before.
