Boulder Beach
by Orvaratli
This beach covered with large rocks is just a few km away from my town.
The soft lava rock gets easily broken by the waves. Years later these pieces of rock get washed up on the beach again as rounded stones.
The ocean seems to deepen quickly at this beach and therefor the waves are more powerful than in other places close by. These waves have managed to build up quite a high pile of rocks.
On the top of this pile is where I placed my tripod. I took a few shots. The shot after this one was the last one as a surprisingly large wave crashed onto the rocks and got me and my camera equipment totally soaked with salt water! It was quite scary as the wave crash very powerfully just a few meters away.
But the most scary part is that for a while I thought that this had been the last shot that my dear Canon 30D had taken. But after intense drying and cleaning, its still works like a charm!

What a wonderfully eerie image! Fantastic color and contrast between solid rocks and foggy sea. Thank you for explaining the rock formation and for sharing the personal info that you got surprised by a wave–I laugh with joy that you shared such a great moment that so many of us have experienced. I’ve been looking at your website for 30 minutes–love that you explain your photos with such detail. Truly great talent!

This shot has a very ethereal look; if you photoshopped a couple of moons in the sky you could convince people it was taken on another planet. It’s a great shot but I’m glad it didn’t cost you your camera, or worse still your life.

There’s so much movement in this beautifully eerie image. If you follow the rocks to the back of the photo where they come to a point, your eyes are then led to the clouds which bring you back to the front, and then back over the rocks. I could look at this shot all day. Thanks.

So good! Thanks for writing all those as it makes your picture alive!

Very moody shot. Nicely done. The water seems to glow. can I assume you used a very slow shutter speed to get the effect?
