Nice shot, Richard. Though there will be some who criticize the fact that the wing and tail are not perfectly focused, this is what a hummer at a feeder really looks like! Those of us who are birders want more info–where do you live, name of bird, time of year, etc. Looks like a female Rufous. Other birds in your portfolio are also great–keep sharing.

Great shot Richard. Good reward for hard work and patience.

Katherine, the tail seems to be out of focus and this in fact is a positive in my view, as it gives a sense of depth to the image. The wings show more of a motion blur and this also strengthens the image, imparting more dynamism. Without these two effects the image would have been flat and static.

It is a great image and considering the fast motion of the bird I would appreciate that the wings are a little blurred. the rest of the image is just in shape so its a great shot.

This is a female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird which was taken on Sept. 8th of this year in Bumpass, VA.
Thanks for the comments.

I personally love the motion blur in the wings, for me the real quality in this is in the eyes and the rest of the head! Stunning image.

It’s so cute how the legs are retracted and the head and body seem so perfectly still with just the wings and tail going at top speed holding it up. Marvelous feat!!

Great image! These birds are extremely hard to catch on film. I took a photo of a South American Humming bird a while back and I remember that it took me several hours to even get an image of it. And that was even in captivity. In the end I did get a pretty decent image of it but, not as nice as this one. Absolutly wonderful. Great job.I too like the blur and the little tucked in legs. Cudos!!

I also really like the emerald green color on the back and head. These birds have the most wonderful colors to them. Again great job.

What a fantastic shot. Right now we have three females constantly fighting over who is going to drink at the feeder. Soon they will be going south and I will miss them.

Is that your real name, and did you name the pic “Hummer” on purpose? Too funny!

Great shot though! And w/ the TC, technically you used a 420mm focal length x 1.63, so 684mm focal length? Did I miss something?
