Buds and Butterfly

by Mukesh Srivastava

In the morning I was watching butterfly flying in my garden around various flower plants. I saw it flying around this rose buds quite often. I took out my camera and waited for around 30 minutes to let the butterfly sit on the rose buds. The moment it sat and about to take off, I clicked.
Equipment: NikonD70S with Tamron 70-300mm Zoom.

Your photo of the day is absolutely fabulous. I love it. And the fact that you waited for this shot adds more to the effects if you know what I mean and I know you do. Great job. I love it.

This really catches the essence of the butterfly’s almost non-stop movement. Although your title describes the static image, I mentally call it “A Flutter by a Rose”. Lovely effect–I really like it!

Most of the times one strives to take a tack sharp image of a butterfly. Here you have turned adversity into opportunity and managed a really nice and original take on a mature and cliched subject. The shutter speed is just ideal to capture the motion in the wings yet keep some parts still sharp. I wonder if a tripod was used.
The white balance is a bit off, with a strong yellow cast and it would have been an even stronger image if some blue is added to everything other than the butterfly.

Well captured. I don’t know if I would have had the patience ;)

I like the color and the angle of the captured butterfly but I am not fond of the motion. I would have preferred a full crystal crisp image over all. But the Idea is nice and originality is of utmost importance when capturing life.

The butterfly and the rose bud seem to be on such different planes that I’m having a hard time believing the butterfly had actually been standing on the rose, but such are the mysteries of nature…

I would have liked a sharper image of the butterfly. However, looking once again at the image I guess I kinda like the little blur of motion. I think it would be more pleasing to me if the left anteni were a bit sharper though. But, when timming is of the essance as it more than likely was in this case, it’s better to just get the shot. I have photographed quite a few butterflies myself so I know how hard it is to capture these unique creatures perfectly. Having said that… What a wonderful image!! Striking colors. White balance could have been a bit better. But, altimately what a beautiful image . Congrats on the POTD.
