Purple Haze

by Shawn Thompson

During my current vacation in California I met up with a local photographer and we took a trip up the Pacific Coast Highway to shoot the sunset at El Matador State Beach. The prehistoric looking jagged rock formations at this location just blew me away. I am a sucker for water and interesting rocks and this location fit the bill perfectly for me. Once the sun started setting the tide started coming in, the sky turned purple and I set up on my tripod, mounted the 3 stop ND Grad and tripped the shutter.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota I have always had a love for the outdoors. I love all types of photography, but living so close to Lake Superior has really sparked my interest in landscape photography.

I love these silky water shots. You did a great job with this one. What was the shutter speed? I guess California is a bit different from Minnesota!

A superb ocean photo, the framing and exposure are perfect. I think you have captured the water just right. Cheers from Terry, Sydney Australia

The circular flow of water around the rocks is really elegant, and with the waves breaking in the distance a lot of action is taqking place.

Pretty lavender sky and great rock formation. I, unlike the others, do not gravitate towards the ‘silky’ looks of the water, but rather prefer a more natural view. Opinions vary as the colors of the sky.

Actualy it is fantastic but I have one question, is there any extra light source in the shot or only sun? it seems there is extra light source from right, the colours are nice and matching each other also the focus of rocks and the variance of rocks volume giving the shot good balance.

Nice! congrats!

Thanks again.

Ahmed,
The light source is the sun setting on the coast to my right.
No artificial lighting was added.
