Alps from a Plane

by Edoardo

The Alps is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original. The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The view is good. I would have also liked to see the color version. There is too much contrast which has killed all the detail in the shadows and the portions not covered by snow.

Artistically speaking I like it very much it has a very nice effect and the contrast is great, however photographically speaking as Anurag has mentioned there is not enough composition to show the beauty of the Alps. I recall the view whilst going to The Netherlands and I cannot find words to describe the view. Nice shot Edoardo.

gives a view of that thorny face of the earth…… a bit of a debate about the contrast, I can see…… a bit more light might’ve opened up the shadows, but it could’ve washed out the brighter parts…… B&W is a nice change of taste; don’t know how the colour would’ve showed up….. overall, a very nice effort indeed!!

I have flown over the alps and the Pyrenees several times. For me this picture is underexposed and doesn’t show the real beauty. I think the color version would have been better.

Nice idea making it black and white – works well IMHO

just my two cents of perspective. it looks like a landscape of canvas-made tents flapping over another, which is great!

It certainly needed description.
I had no idea what I was looking at!
Interesting, but boring!

I love the stark simpleness of the black and white.

Awesome as-is. I love the choice of contrast–it makes this photo work.

Very nice. I love mountain-landscapes. I like the fact you chose b&w for this picture. The very large shady part in the bottom is my only (minor) nit.

Another poetic black and white! I love the movement!

Given all the comments above, it seems to be as always a matter of taste on b/w. I have tried to get this shot and either there is ice on the outside of the window or its cloudy. So well captured.
