Winter Canopy

by Scott Hotaling

After walking a couple miles up a small cove, I captured this image looking up at the snow-capped forest canopy. It was a spectacularly tranquil place with an untouched blanket of snow stretching as far I could see.

This image of contrasting filigreed dark tree crowns dusted with snow is astonishingly stunning and somehow seems protective! Witnessing this image allows me to also experience the peacefulness of this secluded sanctuary!

Excellent compositon! The trees seem to be competing against each other to reach for the light. The wintery look also portrays a cold, yet bright picture of nature.

A cliched subject, well executed.
Curious about you actual apprenticeship

Very nice shot. Its like some sort of movie shot.

Like Anarug wrote, this is a cliched subject. Technically well done, but it doesn’t really do it for me …

Everybody does this shot but not everybody does it as well as you do.

I have seen plenty of canopy photos but one without leaves during winter is my first and this looks great! :D

Well done, Scott!
Congrats on your POTD. The lines in your image lead you right into this beautifully done image.

Anurag, I’m currently a Zoology student with plans to pursue either a Masters degree or PHD in Wildlife Biology.

Colin, this was shot in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, NC.

What a wonderful experience it must have been ! At least what I get from your description makes me drool with envy. Go to France for some of the most beautiful snowy forests in the world, that’s my advice. Now in your picture, the greatest thing is the patterns of the frozen branches. But it’s great overall.

I have been watching you for a bit – your pics are clean and technically beautiful. I tend to be a fan of motion. This is a nice one. Looks like my woods. Good job – nice name.

Thanks, Scott! I remember one of your comments on another photo of mine. Feel free to shoot me an email sometime, I’d love to hear from someone with the same (unique) name.
