Sunset over the Mont Blanc Massif

by Jonathan Griffith

Alpinist soaking up a perfect sunset over the Mont Blanc massif. In the distance are the infamous peaks of the Drus and Aiguille Verte. Directly below is a 4000ft drop down the Aiguille du Midi north face.
Equipment: Canon 5d, 24-105L

My photography work comes almost exclusively from the mountain environment. I am deeply passionate about capturing moments where man and nature interact- if I could encourage just one person to leave their desk job behind and see what there is to experience in the mountains then I would be over the moon.

Perfect. The colours, the scale, the angle…. Every element to an awesome photograph. Congrats.

What a place to watch the sunset! It looks like a cold night coming for the climbers. The photo is great as well.

Wops seems to have desaturated quite a bit! It was a fantastic evening and a very scenic place for photos. We then headed back down over the RHS to bivouac under the stars…wasnt too cold actually!

Agree with everything thats been said, but I do feel its a bit underexposed. Maybe the camera exposure compensation was set to underexpose because of all the snow around, but here there is much less snow, so the shot may have got over compensated.

I think that lighting in this shot is perfectly corresponding to the fact that the climber is gazing at the sunset! I have been in this situation and you got the natural look of this shot… Well done! This shot has passion and the lighting contributes to that feeling. Anyone this high up at this time of day can only be passionate about climbing!

France is beautiful ! And even more when a good photographer takes a good picture of it. The color of the rocks and the snow in the sunset is absolutely wonderful. Really, a great pciture.

I just love mountains and this is a great shot. I like the light and the little man on the lefthandside; it puts it all into perspective. Well done!

This photo is amazing. You are inspiring. I would think that too close to the edge of the cliff for me, but the Alpinist must be very brave and lucky to preform such a feet as getting up 4,000 feet in the mountains. Beautiful!

Just when I was getting tired of all the mountain photo winners I see this unusual one of yours. I like the presense of the man because it gives perspective. Does the mountaineer have to spend the night on the mountain…in the snow? I guess I won’t be starting a career as a mountain climber…like ever. But, I’m happy for photographers like you who take the risks so I can see lovely photos yours.
