Nurturing survival

by Linda Jones

I had the pleasure of watching the true mother nature. She did a good job. They were gone in 14 days.

How lucky you were! You did a great job capturing these little beauties – just magnificent!

Fantastic. I like the dark background. The out of focus leaves give a nice feeling of camouflage. Complimentary pair of green and red on the mother and child gives a sense of bonding and completeness, that alone either one of them is incomplete, and the sidelight is just gorgeous.

Great use of depth of field and focus. It lakes for a nice and intimate portrait.

very nice closeup, I am sure you were quite well hidden to get this shot. The contrast between young and grown is so vivid.

Great shot, how did you get so close without scaring the bird away?

- Great subject and moment.
- Too much bokah. Looks more like a muslin than an outdoor shot.
- There’s something in the way in the foreground obviously that ruins the pic. Not EarthShots Quality.
- Where on Earth this is, is not even specified. I suggest all submissions that do not include this information be rejected.

The foreground blur does spoil it somewhat but I think ur being a bit harsh there Tom – it’s worthy of Earthshots for the great capture that it is. Taking shots of nature is not like in a studio where you can set it up perfectly – sometimes you have to go with what you are given and Linda did well without disturbing them.

Hello, and thank you for the nice comments, and I appreciate the constructive critique!
The reason why the bokeh is so weird is because I had tons of branches to shoot through, which without destroying the protective cover of the nest, left me literally threading the needle. ;~)
I sure am thrilled to have it chosen for photo of the day. Thanks again!

And thanks Ellen for the email or I would have not even known it was chosen, having been gone all week! I was at Death Valley, hoping to get some cool landscape photos. it did feel very intimate, as she was shy at first, but soon allowed me fairly close.

This photo was taken at a nature walk/park near me in Irvine, California.

Thnx again, everyone. We had a ritual going on where every day I would go stand by the tree, calling her Lil’Anna, then the mother came, sat in the tree above me and watched. Finally after a few complaints by her, she’d zoom around me and then show up out of nowhere to feed them. Giving me about 4 seconds to get a few shots off. The light was strictly a ray of sun through the leaves, so I had to wait until afternoon. I tried flash one day and she was frightened by it, so I never used it again. I feel fortunate to have the experience.

Nice and sharp. Whatever was in between your lens and the bird’s nest spoils it a bit though.
